Frequently Asked Questions

How does Acupuncture work?
Energetic pathways called ‘meridians’ originate within each organ and travel throughout the entire body. Life-promoting ‘substances’ such as shenqijing, yin, and yang circulate through these meridians nourishing every cell, tissue and organ in our body- as well as our mind and spirit! Specific points along these meridians are stimulated by applying hair thin needles to encourage the circulation of Qi to areas of the body that are stagnant, or to strengthen areas that are depleted. And sometimes it’s a combination of both! The overall objective is to balance the bodily systems so that Qi energy may circulate unimpeded with harmonious vitality.

Does Acupuncture hurt?
Generally, acupuncture is not painful. Most people find it to be a very pleasant experience. Insertion of the needle produces little to no sensation at all. When the body’s Qi is activated some people may experience a mild tingling, burning, achy, heavy or electric sensation at the acupuncture sight or within the meridian pathway being treated.

Are the needles sterile?
Absolutely! Acupuncturists are required to follow strict protocol regarding the use of needles. Only sterilized, single-use, disposable needles are used to ensure the safety of all patients.

Do you accept insurance?
I am paneled with most insurance companies. Please contact your insurance provider to learn more about your acupuncture benefits/limits, and that you will be covered for acupuncture with Kathryn Durand. Most insurance plans do offer acupuncture benefits, the amount of visits per year and conditions covered can vary from plan to plan.

How many treatments will I need and how often?
There is no set formula for the number and frequency of treatments as each patient’s health history and response to treatments are quite unique. Typically, the recommendation is 1-3 treatments per week depending on the severity and duration of the condition. Patients may respond favorably after only one treatment, or may require several months of treatments to reach their health goals.

Can I continue with other care I have been receiving?
Yes. Acupuncture will not interfere with other healthcare modalities. In fact, it may enhance other therapies such as; massage, chiropractic, physical therapy and fertility care. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicines are often used to reduce the side effects of many Western medicines.

Will I need herbs too?
A Chinese herbal formula may be recommended as part of your treatment plan. The use of herbs may enhance the healing process as they serve as daily treatments.

Is your office Accessible?
Unfortunately, it is not assessable for all individuals. My office is located in a house that was built in 1905 and there are a few stairs to navigate to get into the building. Once you’ve entered the building, my office is located on the second floor. If you are able to navigate the few stairs to get into the building, but find that a full set of stairs would be too difficult, I am more than happy to make arrangements to secure an office on the main floor.

Where should I Park?
There is free 2 hour street parking on Warren Ave. and in the surrounding area until 6pm Monday-Saturday and metered parking on Roy St. until 8pm. There are also 2 nearby parking garages.

Are you a fragrance free environment?
We are not a strictly fragrance free establishment but we do ask folks to refrain from wearing perfumed products when coming in. We do often engage in healing work that includes the burning of moxa, sage, and palo santo in the building. If this is bothersome to you, please let me know and I will do my best to accommodate your needs.
